Where it all began..

Every year at TKD Lingerie we celebrate our birthday by joining forces with other home-grown businesses to bring lots of treats to our customers. It’s a really fun day for us and we love seeing all our regular customers and meeting some new faces. On the run up to this year – our 5th birthday – many people have commented on what a huge milestone this is for a small business. I googled it and, yikes…apparently 90-95% of businesses fail in the first 5 years. All I can say is thank goodness I only read this now! So I want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone; customers, the TKD team, bloggers, Facebook group admins, media, family & friends that have contributed to TKD’s success and at the request of a few people here’s a look back on how it all began…

Although TKD opened 5 years ago it was actually back in 2010 when the idea first took shape. I’d always bought my bras on my annual trip back home but that November I was due to have my first baby and was in desperate need of bigger bras. So heavily pregnant, hormonal and with elephant-sized ankles, I hit the malls. If I thought it was tough as a 32E to buy bras, as a 38H I literally was in the desert. At the end of an exhausting day I’d been poked, prodded, laughed at and even looked up and down and informed quite haughtily “We have nothing to fit YOUR size, Madam”.  At the fifth mall I gave up and went home in tears.

Then I got mad. Why, when there are over 150 different bra sizes did many stores only stock 25? Surely I wasn’t the only big boobed lady in this town? I started talking bras to practically every woman I met and quickly realised it wasn’t just me having such a negative experience. So I decided to do something about it, and the rest is history.

Five years on, I still get a thrill when I see a TKD bag walking through the mall. And when I read through our customer comments it is well worth all the late nights. All of your feedback, critical or glowing, is passed on our team and it is this foremost, not the numbers, that we use to guide our business forward – so please keep it coming. I feel very fortunate to be part of our growing team and thank them from the bottom of my heart for sharing my passion. Thank you to you too, our wonderful customers. We were recently able to share our success by permanently lowering almost all of our prices. We still have much to learn and lots of growing to do and I hope will be inviting you to celebrate with us again in another 5 years.
